History of Highgate

Highgate itself is one of the few remaining historic Villages of London. It has thrived since the C16th. It was home to one of original Gates of London. These were taxed ports of entry to the growing Metropolis. As a result it still has many original 'inns' which were used to accommodate weary travellers and their cargo (often of live stock). It is a popular tourist centre and houses the historic 'Highgate Cemetery'.

The Old Cemetery is the resting place of many Poets, Engineers and Artists (including the family of Charles Dickens). The New Cemetery if famed for the grave of Karl Marx. A short work across Hampstead Heath will bring you to the stately home of the Guinness Family, now given over to the public. This Historic House called 'Kenwood House'is filled with Rembrandts and fine Adams furniture.

Also in Highgate's secret Waterlow park contains a C16th haunt of King Charles II 'Lauderdale House' the home of his mistress Nell Gwynne and the fabled birth place of his illegitimate son later the Bishop of London.
